Ask the Doctor: Bone Density

Q: I’m taking calcium and my T score is getting worse. What are some of the natural options to build bone density?
– Anne in Tulsa

A:  There are several things that you can do to build bone density. These include weight bearing activity, hormonal balance, and nutritional supplementation. For activity, try walking or even standing on one foot. In addition to calcium, relevant nutrients may include strontium, boron, magnesium, and vitamin K. Certain medications can also increase your risk of fracture — particularly stomach acid blocking medications such as proton pump inhibitors. Diet is also important. Refined carbohydrates need minerals for digestion and pH buffering. When those minerals aren’t in the food, they get taken from your bones.
